From an unexpected start in analytics to overcoming self-doubt and championing mentorship, Alyssa shares how she’s navigating the fast-paced world of data-driven marketing – and why she’s passionate about making analytics more accessible for women in the field.

Can you introduce yourself and share a bit about your career journey?

I’m Alyssa Scharff an Associate Web Data Analyst here at CroMetrics. I became an analyst almost by accident. I was working at a farming co-op, handling administrative tasks, when I started helping out with reporting. At first, it was just a way to support the team – pulling numbers, organizing data, and creating simple reports. But the more I worked with data, the more I enjoyed uncovering patterns and insights.

One day, while talking to a friend in the analytics field, I realized how much broader and more impactful the world of analytics was. It wasn’t just about generating reports—it was about solving problems, driving decisions, and telling stories through data. That conversation sparked something in me, and I decided to explore analytics more seriously.

I started taking courses, learning new tools, and building my skills. It wasn’t always easy, but I found that the more I learned, the more I loved the work. Eventually, all that effort paid off—I landed my first job as an analyst.

Looking back, what started as a small part of my administrative role turned into a full-fledged career. Now, I get to do work that challenges and excites me, and I’m always learning something new.

Have you faced any unique challenges as a woman in this field? How did you overcome them?

One of the challenges I’ve faced as a woman in this field is the initial fear of being undervalued when meeting with a new client for the first time. There’s always that little worry—will they take me seriously? Will my expertise be recognized? While I’ve encountered a few negative people along the way, the majority have been incredibly supportive.

I’m continually learning to silence self-doubt and remind myself that I’ve earned my place in the room.

What excites you most about working in this industry?

What excites me most about working in this industry is the constant opportunity to learn and make an impact. I thrive in roles where I can help people get the insights and information they need to make better decisions.

Growth marketing and analytics are always evolving, which keeps the work dynamic and challenging. I love diving into data, uncovering patterns, and translating complex information into actionable insights that drive results. Being able to support others in this way – whether through problem-solving, strategy, or education – is what truly energizes me.

Have you ever had a mentor or strong support system that helped you navigate tough situations? How did that impact you?

If it weren’t for the encouragement of a friend, I wouldn’t even be here. They played a huge role in helping me get up to speed, answering my questions, and continuing to support me to this day. Their guidance gave me the confidence to keep going, even when things felt overwhelming.

I’ve also been incredibly lucky with the managers I’ve had throughout my career. They’ve been invaluable mentors—offering honest feedback, pushing me to grow, and guiding me toward becoming a better version of myself.

Especially in the beginning, there were moments when I felt like giving up, but my support system kept me going. Their belief in me made all the difference, and I truly don’t know if I would have stuck with this path without them.

How do you build meaningful connections in an industry that’s often fast-paced and data-driven?

Building meaningful connections in a fast-paced, data-driven industry requires intentionality. With so much focus on numbers and performance, it’s easy to get caught up in the work and forget the human side of things. I’ve found that the best way to build lasting relationships is by being genuinely curious about people—asking thoughtful questions, sharing insights, and offering help when I can.

What strategies or habits have helped you grow as a leader in your field?

One of the most valuable strategies that has helped me grow is embracing a learner’s mindset. I’m always willing to step into situations where I’m not the expert and be the “dumbest” person in the room. Surrounding myself with people who are highly skilled in their fields has been incredibly valuable—I learn so much just by observing, asking questions, and staying curious.

I also make it a habit to seek out new knowledge, whether through formal courses, industry discussions, or simply listening to those with different perspectives. Growth marketing and analytics evolve quickly, and staying open to learning has allowed me to adapt and improve.

What do you think is missing from today’s professional networks for women in this field?

One thing missing from today’s professional networks for women in this field is more structured, hands-on mentorship opportunities. While there are plenty of networking groups and online communities, it can be difficult to find direct, ongoing mentorship that helps women not just connect but actively grow their skills and confidence.

Another gap is visibility—there are so many talented women in growth marketing and analytics, yet they are often underrepresented in leadership roles, speaking engagements, and industry discussions. More initiatives that amplify women’s voices, whether through mentorship, speaking opportunities, or peer-led workshops, could make a huge impact.

Lastly, I’d love to see more focus on practical, skill-building sessions where women can support each other in a low-pressure environment. Learning technical skills like analytics, experimentation, and data storytelling can feel intimidating, and having a dedicated space to learn and ask questions without judgment would be incredibly valuable.

If you could create one initiative to uplift other women in growth marketing, what would it be?

I’m passionate about helping women build confidence in analytics. Data can be intimidating, but understanding the basics can be a game-changer for decision-making and career growth. Whenever possible, I try to support women by breaking things down and making analytics more accessible.

If I could create one initiative, it would be a collaborative network of women in Marketing dedicated to learning and teaching each other. This network would provide mentorship, workshops, and a space to share real-world insights, empowering more women to leverage analytics in their careers.
